Diversity in Economics Seminars: Who Gives Invited Talks?

چکیده

Invited seminar talks are a primary way that economists get feedback on their work, disseminate research, and build professional networks. In this paper, we present descriptive evidence who gave invited in economics. We use balanced panel of 66 departments between August 2014 December 2019, focusing the gender underrepresented minority (URM) status speakers. find 76 percent our sample were given by non-URM men, 23 women, less than 1 each URM men women. These averages mask substantial heterogeneity across departments.

In 2009, Peter Cameron introduced a common generalization of various classes of combinatorial designs such as balanced incomplete block designs, resolvable designs and orthogonal arrays. Generalized covering and packing designs can be defined in analogous way. These objects bring into this framework further classes of designs, including covering and packing arrays, Howell designs, monogamous cy...

In team sports, players move in complex but surprisingly predictable ways. With state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning methods, it is now possible to collect sufficiently large player tracking datasets and learn patterns of how players actually move. In this talk, I will describe how this knowledge has been used at Disney Research to generate new analytics and sports broadcasting...

Our understanding of the notion “dynamic system” is a rather broad one: such a system has states, which can change over time. Ontologies are used to describe the states of the system, possibly in an incomplete way. Monitoring is then concerned with deciding whether some run of the system or all of its runs satisfy a certain property, which can be expressed by a formula of an appropriate tempora...

Models for sequential decision making under uncertainty (such as Markov decision processes, or MDPs) have been studied in operations research for decades. The recent incorporation of ideas from many areas of AI, including planning, probabilistic modeling, machine learning, and knowledge representation, have made these models much more widely applicable. In this talk, Boutilier will survey recen...

Bénédicte Haas, University of Paris-Dauphine, France Limits of Non-increasing Markov Chains and Applications to Random Trees and Coalescents Consider a non-increasing Markov chain with values in the set of non-negative integers, starting from a large integer !. We describe its scaling limit as ! → ∞, under the assumption that the large jump events are rare and happen at rates that behave like a...
